starting, advancing and retraining
At Daniel-Tessari Horse Reflections, we train horses to become a confident, responsive and willing partners for their owners, no matter what discipline they are destined for.
Pauly works with a small number of horses at any one time to ensure each horse receives the right amount of training each day.
While most horses come to us to start their ridden careers, we also work with clients looking to advance their horse's training, both in hand and under saddle. We also take horses requiring retraining, either for a change in discipline or where behavioural problems have developed.
Horses are taken for minimum of six weeks, during which they are worked from the ground, ponied (led from another horse) and under saddle. Each horse is ridden in the arena, out in the paddock including 'sweaty saddle blanket' rides. This combination of work ensures that the training, confidence and fitness of each horse is adequately developed during their time with us.
Horses started at Daniel-Tessari Horse Reflections are taught to hard tie and yield to pressure. Each horse is shod by a qualified farrier before they are taken on trail rides to develop outside miles. They are also assessed by a qualified equine physiotherapist to identify and treat any physical issues.
We encourage owners to observe their horses being worked during the starting process, in order to understand how the horse is progressing. Our starting package also includes a one-on-one horsemanship lesson to help you develop the skills and confidence to continue your horse's education at home.
All horses are started by Pauly. Occasionally, horses will be worked by another horseman to assess their response to another person, but always under the supervision of Pauly.
More detailed information on the breaking process and what to expect is included in our factsheet.
Advancing and retraining
Horses come to us to advance their training for a number of reasons - to refine the aids, to bring a horse back into work after a spell or to help build confidence. These sessions provide a great opportunity for Pauly to help identify any issues that may arise and nip adverse habits in the bud before they become a real issue.
Pauly is also experienced in retraining horses for a new discipline, often working with off-the-track thoroughbreds destined for a new equestrian career. We are also able to help owners with horses displaying unwanted behaviours.
In all cases, the length a horse will spend with us will depend on the severity of issues and the time required to retrain. Please contact us if you would like to discuss your situation with us.
Horses are taken for a fee of $550 / week, incl GST. Hay is included, hard feeds to be provided by the owner.
A $220 deposit is required to secure your horse's spot. Breakers are taken for a minimum of six weeks.
